Maryland Drivers Education

Maryland drivers education is an essential first step to life long driving skills. Driving is one of the first major responsibilities in a teens life. Driver education assures a student understands basic traffic laws, rules of the road, basic motor vehicle operation, driver awareness and drug and alcohol effects on driving.

The Maryland driver education course is an interactive course that comes with three CD Roms for use on your home computer. Two of the CD Roms are for the teen student and one disk contains special information, including lesson plan print-outs for behind the wheel training, for the parent. The drivers ed course consists of ten sections that make up 32 hours of computer based instruction along with 14 hours of behind the wheel driver training. In addition, the Maryland drivers education course covers beneficial information about drug and alcohol abuse.

Maryland Drivers License Information

Learner's Permit - Age 15 years & 9 months
Requirements:

• Parent consent required under age 18.
• Must pass all required tests.
• Must complete driver education course.
• Must be accompanied by a supervising driver who is 21 years or older, and has held a license for a minimum of 3 years. The person must be seated beside the new driver at all times, with no other front seat occupants.
• A parent, guardian, or supervising driver must complete a practice log for the learner's permit holder, which is issued by the MVA along with every learner's permit.
• Learner's permits are valid for 1 year from the date they are issued.
• Must hold Permit minimum 4 months.

Provisional License - Age 16 years 1 month
Requirements:

• Must submit a driver education certificate.
• A parent, guardian or supervising driver must submit a completed and signed practice log documenting a minimum of 40 hours of supervised driving for applicants.
• Applicants must pass a skills test administered either in traffic or on a course.
• Provisional license holders under 18 are only authorized to drive without supervision between the hours of 5 am to midnight . From midnight to 5 am a supervising driver who is 21 or older, and has held a license for a minimum of 3 years must accompany them.
• Provisional license holders under 18 and all the passengers in the vehicle they are driving must use proper restraints

Driver's License - Age 17 years and 7 months
Requirements:

• Drivers must hold a provisional license for a minimum of 18 months.
